A 30% drop in distant-water fleet catches combined with tighter official catch limits for 2026 triggers a bullish trend reversal at Asian wholesale terminals.

BEIJING – The global cephalopod market has registered a sharp trend reversal following confirmation of a raw material supply contraction and tighter operational controls on the distant-water fishing fleet. According to economic data published by the specialized index China Squid Index, reference prices at Asian wholesale terminals have initiated a steady escalation, completely reversing the widespread downward trend that characterized the first quarter of the year.

The primary factor driving this price increase stems from the implementation of stricter regulatory measures by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China. The government authority has capped deep-sea deployment in global fisheries to a maximum of 570 distant-water vessels and established a maximum catch limit of 280,000 metric tons for the remaining window of 2026. This fisheries management policy coincided with the early return to port of approximately 100 Chinese jigger vessels from international waters to undergo mandatory structural maintenance.

This reduction in active capacity triggered a 30% drop in catch volumes outside the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Peru, specifically within the international high-seas regulated area of the Southeast Pacific (beyond the 200-mile limit). The shortage of direct catches by the Chinese fleet has forced Asian processing plants to rely on imports from South America to sustain their portioning and distribution lines.

In response to this market dynamic, the index for giant squid (Dosidicus gigas) reflected an immediate increase of 150 yuan per metric ton for commercial-grade fillets weighing 1-2 kg. To facilitate the analysis of commercial margins, a structured table with dual currency conversion at the current market exchange rate is presented (image above).

On the other hand, market analysts are evaluating the impact of this supply crunch in relation to South American production. The Peruvian government maintains its updated annual quota for giant squid at 371,103 metric tons, recording cumulative landings of 286,845 metric tons to date. Despite the physical availability of the resource in its region of origin, the absorption rate by buyers in China is exceptionally aggressive, leading to projections that upward pressure on international prices will remain firm throughout the entire second quarter of the year.
