Extended South American Fishing Ban and Surging Raw Material Costs Force Major Aquaculture Producers to Adjust Market Rates

A massive wave of price hikes is hitting the aquaculture industry this June, driven by a severe global shortage of essential animal protein raw materials. Costs for critical feed ingredients—including fishmeal, chicken meal, and meat and bone meal—have continued to surge across the board, forcing more than ten major raw material and feed suppliers to adjust their market pricing.

The Peruvian Fishing Halts Impact Global Supply

The primary catalyst behind the current market volatility is an extended fishing ban in the north-central waters of Peru, which has now been stretched until June 10. This extension has raised serious concerns across the industry that this season's fishing quotas may not be met.

Responding to the supply crunch, local fishmeal producers and international importers have continuously raised their rates. On the international market, fishmeal offers subsequently surged to a record high of $3,000 per ton.

Domestic Markets Hit Record Highs

Supported by these strong overseas markets and robust demand for aquatic products, imported fishmeal prices have repeatedly shattered previous records. Mainstream quotes are currently sitting between $3,087 and $3,102 per ton (20,900 to 21,000 yuan), representing a dramatic increase of $295 per ton (2,000 yuan) in just a single month.

Industry analysts note that the market is primarily being driven by negotiated transactions. This sharp rise in fishmeal costs—combined with a weakening soybean meal market—has created a domino effect, pulling up the prices of alternative animal protein raw materials like meat and bone meal and chicken meal in rapid succession.

Major Feed Suppliers Announce June Price Hikes

The rising raw material costs are forcing feed manufacturers to pass the expenses down the supply chain. Beginning June 1st, a coalition of more than 10 leading feed companies officially raised their prices for a wide array of specialized feed products.

The companies implementing the adjustments include:

The price adjustments span a vast range of aquaculture sectors, impacting feed formulated for shrimp, tiger prawn, shrimp larvae, yellow catfish, golden pomfret, marine fish, large yellow croaker, eel, turtle, grouper, tortoise, and frog.

Depending on the product, feed prices are expected to rise by up to $222 per ton (1,500 yuan) over the course of June, with standard price increases ranging from $30 to $222 per ton (200 to 1,500 yuan). With the upward trend showing no signs of stopping, market suppliers are currently urging commercial farmers to secure their inventories immediately.
