Federal Agency for Fisheries releases five-month catch data across independent maritime basins as fleets pace toward annual targets

MOSCOW — The Federal Agency for Fisheries (Rosrybolovstvo) has released its latest industrial monitoring data, tracking the steady progress of the domestic fishing fleet. According to official records compiled through June 1, 2026, the total volume of aquatic biological resources harvested by Russian operators since the start of the calendar year has reached 2,016,700 tons.

With the commercial fishing calendar continuing through December 31, 2026, these figures represent a standard mid-year benchmark. Commenting on the seasonal outlook and current management strategies, Ilya Shestakov, the Head of Rosrybolovstvo, noted:

"It is important that the total allowable catch is set using a precautionary approach, taking into account the recommendations of scientists. In 2026, the catch is planned to be increased by 61,100 tons—up to 3.65 million tons. Recent scientific expeditions have shown an increase in the stocks of a number of species, primarily pollock and herring. Thanks to this, Russian fishermen will be able to increase the volume of their catch."

The current catch distribution is categorized across five independent geographical fishery basins, alongside international operations.

Far Eastern Fishery Basin

The region remains the primary driver of national catch volumes, registering a combined output of 1,624,400 tons for the first five months of the year.

  • Pollock: 1,124,900 tons

  • Pacific herring: 273,900 tons (an increase of +13,900 tons compared to the same period in 2025)

  • Cod: 61,500 tons (up by +900 tons against 2025 levels)

  • Far Eastern flounder: 27,500 tons

Northern Fishery Basin

Fleets operating in the northern grounds caught a total of 152,200 tons, showing a slight volume increase of +4,000 tons compared to the 2025 mid-year data.

  • Cod: 73,800 tons

  • Haddock: 36,700 tons (reflecting a +11,600 ton increase over 2025 levels)

Western Fishery Basin

Baltic operations brought in an aggregated volume of 45,700 tons, outpacing the previous year's comparative timeframe by +2,000 tons.

  • Sprat: 33,200 tons (an increase of +6,100 tons against 2025)

  • Baltic herring: 9,600 tons

Azov-Black Sea Fishery Basin

Southern maritime operations yielded a combined catch of 18,600 tons, relying primarily on pelagic species.

  • Anchovy: 12,400 tons

Volga-Caspian Fishery Basin

The inland and landlocked waters of this basin accounted for a total of 33,600 tons of harvested biomass.

  • Sprat: 13,200 tons

Global Operations and Foreign Waters

Outside of domestic territorial lines, Russian-flagged vessels extracted 132,651 tons of aquatic bioresources. These operations were carried out within the exclusive economic zones (EEZ) of foreign nations, conventional areas, and the open waters of the World Ocean.

These international operations include active agreements like the bilateral fishing framework within Morocco's EEZ. Under these treaties, Russian operators pay standard commercial licensing and entry fees—valued at several million US$—to secure access to pelagic stocks outside domestic waters.
