Reducing the volume of by-products and waste generated in aquaculture and, therefore, the problems associated with their management, while improving productivity and the use of natural resources to help increase the long-term sustainability of aquaculture activity is the goal of a new guide published by AZTI.
The Guide for Minimization of Aquaculture By-products and Waste aims to serve as a tool for the development of a plan to minimize by-products and waste in an aquaculture enterprise.
The publication, prepared by AZTI for the Spanish Aquaculture Observatory (OESA), is part of the 2014-2020 Pluriannual Strategic Plan for Spanish Aquaculture (PEAE).
AZTI points out that aquaculture, as a primary production process, is an activity that generates animal by-products not intended for human consumption (SANDACH) and other waste. To this fact, it should be added that sometimes the lack of the necessary infrastructure and the technical difficulties for a correct management of the residues in aquaculture activities is an important concern from the legal, economic and environmental point of view.
The guide offers valuable information and key facts to implement a plan of minimization of by-products and personalized waste in each aquaculture plant.
The work proposes 26 minimization measures to reduce the volume of generated by-products and waste. These measures can be implemented in the operational activities of the production process, in cleaning operations, maintenance of equipment, purchases, and so on.
