Official data on bluefin tuna imports

The average price at Customs of Japan of bluefin tuna or northern bluefin (Thunnus thynnus and Thunnus orientalis) and frozen southern bluefin (Thunnus maccoyii) (HS 030345010, HS 030345020 and 030346000) in May was JPY 589/kg, down 71% on that of Aprilh and down 72% on that of the May 2018. During the first five months, the average price was JPY 1,495/kg, down 17% on that of the same period last year.
Imports of bluefin tuna in May were scarce and 87% came from Korea, at an average price of JPY 565/kg.

In the reported month, 73 tonnes of frozen bluefin were imported for a value in Japanese customs of JPY 43 million, a drop of 68% in volume and of 91% in value compared with the previous month, and 57% less in volume and 88% less in value than in May 2018.

In the first five months of the year imports reached 1,077 tonnes and JPY 1,610 million.

In the January-May period Korea sent 449 tonnes of frozen bluefin to Japan, worth JPY 696 million, followed by Taiwan (286 t) and Croatia (192 t).
