The Minister of the Sea, Rosa Quintana, visited the Malpica fishermen's guild today, where she highlighted the importance of these entities for the development of the sector and for recovery after the health crisis caused by the coronavirus. For this reason, he explained that Galicia included in its plan for the revitalization of the Avantemar sea-industry complex 600,000 euros in support for the fishermen's brotherhoods and other fish market management entities with the aim of compensating for the falls in income they suffered during the state of alarm. as a result of the lower demand for seafood due to the closure of the hotel business and thus favor the maintenance of its activity.
The owner of Mar thanked the effort made by fishing vessels and the fish markets themselves during the pandemic to fulfill their role as an essential activity for the supply of quality food to the public and stressed that there were fish markets that even registered more discharges than during the same period of 2019 but that saw their income decrease due to the fall in prices due to lower demand. This is the case of Malpica, which saw how discharges during the state of alarm increased more than 50% compared to the same period in 2019 but income fell more than 20%.
In this situation, the Avantemar plan includes those 600,000 euros of budget with the Xunta's own funds to alleviate the fall in income due to the lower billing of the brotherhoods and market management entities between March 14 and May 15. The call for these contributions, explained Rosa Quintana, will be published in the Official Gazette of Galicia in the coming days and will be resolved throughout 2020. The amount of the support will be set taking into account the drop in income compared to it. period of 2019 and will consist of 70% of the loss of income for the rates that correspond to the requesting entities for the auction or sale -with a maximum to consider of 7% - in the period of the state of alarm.
The representative of the Galician Executive stressed that the Avantemar plan aims to reactivate the Galician sea-industry chain as soon as possible and that no one is left behind on the road to recovery, paying special attention to those professionals and entities that, as in this case, do not they benefit from the measures designed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food under the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (FEMP).
Support lines of the ‘Avantemar 'plan
The Avantemar plan will mean a global injection of 77 million euros in 2020 and 14 million in 2021 in the sea-industry complex through five support lines that seek to provide liquidity and solvency to companies in the sector to guarantee their sustainability and competitiveness in the face of the current difficulties derived from the covid-19.
Among the measures to support the sector included in the plan is the one aimed at ships that continued to fish during the pandemic despite the fact that it was not profitable, which has a budget of 7.3 million euros, as well as the one designed for shellfish workers who cannot access the extraordinary benefit for cessation of activity authorized by the State Government. These two measures are entirely financed with the Autonomous Community's own funds.
The Ministry of the Sea of Galicia launched a plan to reactivate the maritime-fishing sector last June to deal with the coronavirus crisis, which will mean a global injection of 77 million euros in 2020 through five support lines.
To them are added eight million euros in support for the transformer sector, which are delayed to 2021 with the aim of alleviating the falls in the invoicing registered during this year, six million for aquaculture companies also next year to cover the reductions of income in the current year, and 400,000 euros for the redeiras that saw their activity drop and the number of orders as a result of the lower activity of the fleet.
The Regional Minister of the Sea stressed the importance of continuing to promote and incentivize the consumption of seafood to boost prices and thank the sector for its essential role in supplying society and encouraged all sea professionals to continue working together to overcome the difficulties as soon as possible and that the sea-industry chain recovers its vigor and strength prior to the health alert.
