In a proactive move to boost its leading shrimp export commodity, Indonesia's Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) is intensifying direct support for shrimp farmers. Officials are now visiting ponds to certify good aquaculture practices and ensure optimal, sustainable production, particularly of vannamei shrimp, across regions like North Sumatra.
DELISERDANG – The Indonesian government, through its Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), is taking a direct approach to accelerate the nation's shrimp cultivation efforts. By actively supporting the opening of new farming areas and optimizing existing ones, the KKP aims to solidify Indonesia's position as a global leader in sustainable shrimp production.
This initiative comes as shrimp farming experiences rapid growth across various regions, notably along the northern coast of North Sumatra, encompassing areas like Medan, Binjai, and Langkat. These locations have recently seen the emergence of numerous shrimp ponds adopting modern and intensive cultivation technologies.

The KKP, specifically through its Quality Agency, is warmly embracing and directly backing the enthusiasm of these shrimp entrepreneurs. A key aspect of this support involves direct engagement at the aquaculture sites to certify good fish farming practices. This hands-on approach aims to standardize all stages of cultivation, ensuring compliance with best methods and quality benchmarks.
"The Ministry deliberately went directly to the ponds so that we can comprehensively monitor all stages of shrimp cultivation," stated Nandang Koswara, Head of the Quality Agency of the Medan I Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, during a recent visit to a vannamei shrimp farming area in Pangkalan Brandan, Langkat. "It is hoped that if these business actors have implemented good cultivation methods, the harvest will be more optimal in terms of quantity and quality."

The government views increased shrimp production as vital for Indonesia, as it represents a leading export commodity. To achieve this, the KKP emphasizes the crucial need for synergy and direct governmental support for these business actors. Such collaborative efforts are expected to yield tangible benefits for the community, including equitable distribution of labor opportunities, enhanced welfare, and a significant boost to the nation's foreign exchange earnings. This direct engagement underscores the government's commitment to fostering a robust, high-quality, and sustainable shrimp industry that delivers widespread economic advantages.
