In an industry first, Daiwa Can Co., Ltd. has unveiled "Renge de Can," a groundbreaking innovation allowing canned food to be heated directly in a microwave oven. This new technology, featuring a unique "Non-Spark Cap," promises to significantly enhance convenience and safety, potentially creating a new market segment for ready-to-heat meals.

TOKYO – Canned food is set for a major leap forward with the introduction of "Renge de Can" by Daiwa Can Co., Ltd. This pioneering technology, developed after four years of dedicated research, allows consumers to safely heat canned contents directly in a microwave oven – an industry first.

The core of this innovation lies in the "Non-Spark Cap™," a uniquely designed attachment fitted to the bottom of the can. This cap effectively prevents the sparking that traditionally occurs when metal containers are microwaved. By maintaining an appropriate distance from the bottom of the microwave oven, the Non-Spark Cap™ mitigates the concentration of microwaves on the can's surface, thus reducing the risk of electrical discharges.

Heat canned food as is

The microwaves around the bottom of the can and the microwaves around the bottom of the range reinforce each other.

When strong microwaves hit the bottom of the can, electrons are emitted from the surface, causing sparks.

Traditionally, heating canned food required transferring the contents to a microwave-safe dish, a step that often deterred consumers seeking quick and easy meal solutions. "Renge de Can™" eliminates this inconvenience, offering a seamless and safe cooking experience.

"We launched a development project in February 2021 with the desire to provide canned food that anyone can easily heat in a microwave," stated a Daiwa Can representative. "After a four-year development period, we successfully developed 'Renge de Can™'."

When non-spark cap TM is installed

The can is placed on top of the Non-Spark CapTM to prevent the microwaves around the bottom of the can and the bottom of the range from being intensified.

Since strong microwaves do not hit the bottom of the can, electrons on the surface are not emitted and no sparks are generated.

The company now plans to accelerate efforts towards mass production and actively promote this new genre of heated canned food. By combining the established benefits of canned goods – long shelf life and portability – with the unparalleled convenience and safety of microwave heating, Daiwa Can aims to tap into new market opportunities and meet the evolving demands of modern lifestyles.

Spark Mechanism

When strong microwaves are applied to canned foods in a microwave oven, the free electrons on the surface of the metal can vibrate, causing some of the electrons to fly out of the metal. These electrons collide with molecules and atoms in the air, and sparks are generated during the process of breaking them down into ions and electrons.

The main mechanism behind the generation of sparks from cans placed in a microwave oven is "exposure to strong microwaves."

This technology is poised to redefine convenience in the canned food sector, offering consumers a ready-to-eat meal solution that minimizes preparation and cleanup. While heating times will vary depending on microwave wattage and specific contents, the innovation marks a significant advancement in food packaging and preparation.

Daiwa Can Co. , Ltd. is a can manufacturer headquartered in Chiyoda Ward , Tokyo . It is the second largest can manufacturer in the industry
