New seafood cargo terminal to boost air freight from Oslo

Norwegian hub Oslo Airport (OSL) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Worldwide Flight Services (WFS) for the operation of a new onsite seafood centre.

According to WFS, this airport increased its volume by 36 per cent last year compared to the previous one, to about 185,000 tonnes. Much of that traffic – about 90,000 tonnes – is attributable to seafood exports from the region, which is one of the top exports of the Norwegian economy behind petroleum products.

WFS is present at more than 196 major airports in 22 countries, servicing international carriers like American, Delta, Lufthansa, Air China and Emirates.

“As one of the world’s leading cargo handlers globally, we are excited to expand our network into Norway and Oslo Airport. The seafood industry is a unique opportunity for us to share our experience and excellence in air cargo handling,” stressed John Batten, executive vice president cargo EMEAA at WFS.

For his part, Martin Langaas, director of cargo at OSL, said the new facility – which will accommodate 250,000 tonnes of capacity annually – will “increase the competitiveness of Norwegian seafood globally” toward the goal of becoming “the preferred cargo hub in Northern Europe.”

With a surface amounting to 17,000 square metres and totally automated, the new terminal will be able to handle about 25,000 tonnes of seafood per year.

The airport expects construction of the terminal to commence in April 2019 and to open in 2021.
