Biodiversity treaty on the high seas could affect fishing sector, shipowners warn

The Argentine Chamber of Shipowners of Deep Sea Fishing Vessels (CAABPA) has decided to make public the concern of the sector for a treaty that is being discussed at the United Nations and could have a direct impact on the Argentine fishing sector.

The president of that entity, Diego García Luchetti explained in 99.9 that "within the framework of the UN, in the Convention on the Rights of the Sea that takes place in New York, there is a discussion about a new biodiversity treaty at sea. There is a great movement that drives to preserve in some way what happens there, what is being discussed are the parts in which there is a large conservation movement with marine protected areas that could affect the coastal states. "

The side effects of that decision could have an impact on national fisheries but he said that there is still no decision taken: "There is an idea to interconnect these new marine protected areas with each place. It is a document under discussion,  which started in 2018 and is to end in 2020. What is being developed would be the penultimate day and we are attentive because any supranational organization would come to intervene, in part, on our platform.”

They have not received any notification of the participation of the national government in that meeting, but from a chamber that includes them: "We as a sector are not informed about the Argentine presence in that meeting, although we believe that the Foreign Ministry must have a representative. We received this information because we are part of a Latin American Chamber of Sustainable Fisheries that is being conformed. Representatives of that Chamber are participating in the Convention," he explained.

In addition, he took the opportunity to leave his impression on the progress of the shrimp season that is in full swing: “It started well, now there is a drop in catches that may be due to the bad weather of the last days. As for the level of catches it was similar in quantities to last season.”
