The total estimate of the authority was 103,720 escaped fish, corresponding to 12% of the total salmonids present in the center (875,125). This information was based on prospecting studies and analysis of images taken with two underwater robots (ROVs) and with high-tech Hammerhead sonars, carried out by the company, as requested by the competent sector authorities.
The report indicates that the leak affected two of the 18 cages at the center. The remaining 16 cages, meanwhile, sank, carrying with them a total of 771,405 fish, equivalent to 88% of the fish in the center. Therefore, the mortality present on the seabed is estimated at 2,900 tons, given that the average weight of salmon at the time of the contingency was 3.8 kilos.
Likewise, the National Director, Alicia Gallardo, reported that Sernapesca verified, through inspections, the recapture of 28,276 fish, which corresponds to 27.26% of the total fish escaped. It should be noted that according to article 118 quater of the General Fisheries and Aquaculture Law, the owner must recapture more than 10% of the escaped specimens within 30 days, counted from the event.
Regarding the mortality situation inside the cages sunk to 295 meters, the company must deliver today a safe retirement plan. Sernapesca continues the inspection in a coordinated manner with the rest of the competent authorities in the matter, such as the Navy and the Environment Superintendence.
