Portuguese startup develops a portable, real-time nitrogen sensing system, securing €100,000 in funding to protect aquatic ecosystems and optimize aquaculture.

LISBONNitrogen Sensing Solutions (NS2), a pioneering Portuguese startup, is transforming water quality monitoring with its innovative portable system that measures nitrogen levels in real time. This technology eliminates the need for slow, traditional lab tests by delivering accurate data directly to a user's smartphone, tablet, or dashboard.

The company, which secured €100,000 in venture capital funding with support from the European Union's BlueInvest program, aims to address a critical challenge in aquaculture and agriculture: maintaining optimal nitrogen levels. Excess nitrogen compounds, such as ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates, can be toxic to aquatic life and disrupt production. NS2’s advanced biosensor technology puts smart monitoring tools directly into the hands of fish farmers, environmental agencies, and water managers.

Founded in 2019 by biochemistry researcher Dr. Gabriela Almeida, NS2 is built on more than two decades of scientific research. Dr. Almeida created a multidisciplinary team to convert this research into practical solutions for better water management.

The system uses small, disposable test strips and portable readers to detect nitrogen levels, allowing users to take immediate, informed action. This proactive approach helps fish farmers prevent toxic buildups that could lead to costly losses and enables environmental agencies to respond more quickly to pollution events.

NS2’s journey was significantly accelerated by the BlueInvest Readiness Assistance Programme, which provided a coach with expertise in both business and aquaculture. According to Marise Almeida, NS2’s COO and CFO, this mentorship was a "perfect match" that provided both business and technical support. The collaboration led to joint projects, including sensor testing in aquaponics systems. The company is now seeking additional investment to expand its team and explore new markets.
