A Collaborative Effort to Strengthen China's Sea Cucumber Industry

BEIJING — In a major initiative to elevate China's sea cucumber industry, the China Fisheries Association has partnered with the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Inspection and Quarantine and the Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences to create a groundbreaking traceability platform and a joint research center.

The three parties will further promote the establishment of a long-term mechanism for improving the quality of the sea cucumber industry

This strategic cooperation aims to address key industry challenges, particularly concerning product quality, safety, and consumer trust. By leveraging the combined expertise of all three parties, the initiative will focus on crucial areas, including quality testing, analysis and evaluation, technology research and development, and the construction of a robust, industry-wide traceability system.

A New Standard for Consumer Confidence

The "China Sea Cucumber High-Quality Traceability Service Platform" (中国海参高质量追溯服务平台), with its official website at http://haishen.caiqgba.org.cn , has now officially launched. The platform empowers consumers with unprecedented transparency. By simply scanning a traceability label (QR code) on a product’s packaging, consumers can access detailed information, including:

  • Breeding Area: The specific origin of the sea cucumber.

  • Quality Inspection Reports: Official reports verifying product quality and safety.

  • Circulation Trajectory: A log of the product's journey from the producer to the point of sale.

Fangjiapuzi launches China's first batch of traceable sea cucumbers and Fangjiapuzi traceable fish maw

This enhanced level of detail goes beyond basic product information, providing consumers with a reliable assurance of authenticity and quality. The platform's initial launch includes well-known brands such as Guanzhan, Tong Ren Tang Health, Haishenghe, and Fangjiapuzi.

Establishing a Joint Research Center

To provide a scientific foundation for the platform, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Research Institute and the Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute have jointly established the "Joint Research Center for Sea Cucumber Quality and Safety." This center will focus on developing high-precision detection technologies, creating scientific grading systems, and accurately identifying core production areas.

Fangjiapuzi takes the lead in drafting and issuing the "Pure Sea Cucumber" group standard

The Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute brings significant scientific strength to the partnership. A team from the institute was a key contributor to a project that won the 2020 National Science and Technology Progress Award for its research on the functional components of sea cucumbers and advanced processing technologies. This work has resulted in the creation of eight national and industry standards for various sea cucumber products, providing a strong scientific basis for the platform's rigorous quality control.

The three partners are committed to building a long-term mechanism for improving the sea cucumber industry. The traceability platform is designed to be an authoritative, full-chain system covering breeding, processing, and distribution, ultimately serving producers and protecting consumers by ensuring the integrity and quality of China's sea cucumber products.
