Alaska commercial salmon harvest reaches just 36% of forecasted total as of August 1

Cumulative catch continues to trail last season across all five Pacific salmon species, with drastic declines of over 90% in pink salmon and a 61% drop in keta salmon compared to 2025.

Alaska’s commercial salmon harvest through August 1, 2026 (statistical week 8) reached just 36% of the total forecasted for the season. Total catches across the state remain below the pace set last season for all five Pacific salmon species, with an exceptionally severe slowdown in pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) harvests.

Statewide cumulative pink salmon harvest stood at 2.6 million fish, representing a mere 5% of the forecasted annual catch of nearly 56 million fish. In key regions such as Prince William Sound and Southeast, pink salmon catches are down by more than 90% compared to 2024, a year that already recorded historically low levels in those areas.

Meanwhile, statewide keta salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) harvest dropped 61% compared to 2025, with the summer harvest peak now passed. Regarding coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch), the latest of the five species to spawn, harvesters have begun landing larger numbers, though year-over-year catches reflect a 74% decline compared to 2025.

Additionally, test fisheries at Point Gardner and Kingsmill concluded last week with results confirming below-average runs for both keta and pink salmon in the inside waters of Southeast, particularly impacting the early pink run. Conducted by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) to assess spawning abundance in inside waters, the test fishery yielded below-average keta catches in all six weeks of testing, while pink catches remained below average in five of the six weeks.
