In octopus capture, whose season has already lasted 50 days, some 3,000 tonnes would have been caught, representing 40 per cent less compared to the same period last year; fishing is expected to improve in the rest of this season, according to sources close to the sector.
The cause of the low catch has been the constant bad times, the groundswell due to the cyclones, which has affected the coastal fishing that does not recover. As for the boats of the largest fleet, during the week that they were inactive due to the groundswell, returned with catches average of four tons, one less than in the first trip.
So far, the earthquake that hit Mexico City and the hurricanes that struck several ports in the United States have not affected the sales of octopus and fish to the domestic and foreign markets, said Manuel Sánchez González, president of the Yucatan Shipowners Union.
Miami, Florida, a tourist area in the United States, he said, was not affected by the two cyclones that hit that northern country, so fish sales have not been cancelled.
According to Manuel Sánchez, in the Mexican market, fish and octopus are sold in La Viga but the strong seafood customers that buy octopus are in Jalisco, Sinaloa, Sinaloa, Sonora, Baja California and Querétaro, where the sales are normal.
Sánchez González said they feared that due to Tuesday's quake, yesterday the customers would call the freezer firms to cancel their orders, but that did not happen, the sales are still normal.
