Chinese state-owned company builds tilapia farm

Some 200 tilapia ponds are being built in the town of Barra de Dande, Bengo province (north of Luanda), by the Chinese company RSI Su-Lda, for USD 1 million, according to company spokesperson Pedro Panzo in statements to Agence Angola Press (Angop) news agency.
He reported that the project with 85 per cent of the ponds built will contribute to the social and economic development of the country and family income.
"We will fight poverty in the local community in this way," he said.
Without determining the amount, Petro Panzu said that tilapia production in the town of Barra de Dande would be destined to the population of the province of Bengo and other towns in the country.
"In its first phase, the company has 40 workers among nationals and expatriates, pending the hiring in the second phase," concluded the spokesperson, anticipating that in the future the local production of fish food ration.
Due to its favorable environmental conditions and available water resources, the Angolan nation in South Africa has an excellent potential for the development of freshwater and marine aquaculture.
Most of the importance of fisheries in the country so far has been concentrated on marine capture fisheries and the fishing sector is the third most important sector for the Angolan economy, following the oil and diamond industries.
Angolan aquaculture production is still relatively modest, with an estimated 305 tonnes of tilapia production mainly from the Nile, according to FAO statistics published in 2014.
