Mollusc production area closed due to health risk of hepatitis virus

The National Fisheries Health Agency (Sanipes) ordered the closure of the bivalve mollusc production area (mussels, fan scallops, clams, among others) El Frontón (016-CAL-01) - Callao (016) / Lima, due to health risk of Hepatitis A virus (HAV).

After analyzing the results obtained in the monitoring, the HAV virus was found in a number greater than the maximum control limit, so the entity attached to the Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) proceeded with applying Contingency Plan No. 033-2019- SANIPES / SDSA.

During the closing period of the El Frontón production area, the extraction of bivalve molluscs is prohibited. Failure to comply with this measure will be considered as an act against public health and the operators involved will be subject to the penalties indicated by law.

Hepatitis A is an infectious disease of the liver caused by Hepatovirus A (HAV). Many cases have few or no symptoms, especially in the young. The time between infection and symptoms, in those who develop them, is between two and six weeks.

The reopening of the affected production area will only happen if, after a new evaluation of cause analysis, the results report absence of the virus genome in two consecutive samples.

In this way, Sanipes complies with alerting society about the health risks that arise in hydrobiological resources, safeguarding public health and guaranteeing their safety.
