Jack mackerel exports register exponential growth

Jack mackerel exports recorded an exponential growth in the first half of the year, reaching USD 37.4 million, an increase of 2156% over the same period of 2018 (USD 1.6 million), reports the Association of Exporters (ADEX).

According to the president of the Committee on Fisheries and Aquaculture of the exporting guild, Elie Barsimantov, this important growth is explained by greater capture and diversification of markets. In the first six months, more than 43,000 tons were shipped.

The main destinations of Peru´s jack mackerel produts were African countries. The most important by amount was Nigeria (USD 21.2 million), followed by Cameroon (USD 7.5 million), Ghana (USD 3.1 million) and Ivory Coast (USD 2.9 million), to which no exported were recorded in 2018.

The main exporting regions of this hydrobiological resource were Piura, Ancash, Callao and Ica and the cargo was dispatched from the ports of Callao, Paita, Chimbote, Tumbes and Pisco.

The fish entered to Cameroon through the Port of Douala; to Nigeria through the ports of Lagos, Apapa and Onne; to Ghana through the ports of Tema and Buenaventura; Cote D’ivoire for Abdijan and South Korea for Busan.

The jack mackerel was sent basically  as frozen fish (97% of the total) and in smaller quantity in preserved form (with water, oil and tomato sauce). It is highly demanded for its high content of omega-3 fatty acids, economic price and low presence of contaminants.

In the aforementioned period, jackmackerel was in third place in the export ranking of hydrobiological species for direct human consumption (CHD), behind the pota (giant squid) and shrimp. The companies that exported the most were Tecnológica de Alimentos S.A. (TASA), Pesquera Diamante, Pesquera Exalmar, Austral Group, Pesquera Hayduk, among others.

One of the new jack mackerel markets is Benin, a country located in western Africa that borders Togo to the west, Nigeria to the east and Burkina Faso and Niger to the north. It has a population of over 9 million people and imported jack mackere in frozen and fresh presentations.
