The nuclear-powered container ship "Sevmorput" was built in 1988 to support the northern delivery. He is able to independently pass continuous ice fields up to a meter thick at a speed of about two knots and transport about 36 thousand tons of cargo. After having been laid up in Murmansk for years awaiting disposal, the vessel was extensively refitted and returned to service in 2016.
On March 1, 2018, Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking with a message to the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, said that the Northern Sea Route (NSR) will become "the key to the development of the Russian Arctic, regions of the Far East." The development plan of the Northern Sea Route on behalf of the head of state has been developed and is being implemented by Rosatom Corporation.
The Northern Sea Route is the shortest sea route between the European part of Russia and the Far East
An alternative to the NSR is transport routes passing through the Suez or Panama Canals.
If the distance traveled by ships from the port of Murmansk to the port of Yokohama (Japan) through the Suez Canal is 12,840 nautical miles, then the NSR is only 5770 nautical miles (about 40%) and about 20 days faster than the traditional delivery route.
