Imarpe points out that in the face of environmental variability, fishing resources make changes in their renewal strategy.
Lima - The study of the reproductive aspects of the resources are the basis for a responsible and sustainable management of fisheries, said biologist Ángel Perea de la Matta, coordinator of the Coastal Laboratory of IMARPE - Chimbote.
“From the Imarpe, every fortnight we update the studies of the gonadal maturity of the anchovy, through indicators, to support regulatory measures. There is a great technical challenge for the following years, which consists of identifying the mechanisms that allow us to make more accurate forecasts of recruitment”, said the expert.
During his presentation "Reproductive aspects of the main Peruvian fisheries", within the framework of the Marine Sustainability Conference - organized by the National Fisheries Society (SNP), he stated that given the environmental variability that characterizes our ecosystem, all fishing resources make changes and reproduction strategies, which ensures the renewal of their populations. In this sense, he reported that Imarpe has worked on the construction of the maturity scales of the main commercial species such as anchovy, squid, horse mackerel, mackerel, sole, vinciguerria, silverside, hake, among others.
For his part, the president of the SNP, Cayetana Aljovín, underlined the commitment of the fishing industry with the care of resources and highlighted the application of self-sales carried out by companies associated with the union to protect juvenile specimens.
“Peru has become a world example of responsible and sustainable fisheries management, since the anchovy biomass has remained stable for more than 15 years, with more than 8 million tons. This has been possible thanks to the respect of the reproductive processes and protection of the juvenile resource by the fishing industry and we must continue in that line ”, he explained.
The conference was opened by the head of the fishing union, Cayetana Aljovín; and it was closed by the president of the SNP Scientific Research Committee, Ricardo Bernales.
