Innovasea, a global leader in advanced aquatic solutions for aquaculture and fish tracking, has officially extended its land-based aquaculture systems to Iceland.
"We are thrilled to bring our expertise, innovative equipment, and engineering prowess to Iceland," said Marc Turano, VP of Innovasea. "Iceland has demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainable aquaculture, and we are proud to support this initiative."
Innovasea’s entry into the Icelandic market is through Thor Salmon, which is installing Innovasea’s cutting-edge Gas Management Towers (GMT) at its smolt production facility in Thorlakshofn, South Iceland.
What sets Innovasea’s GMT apart is its gravity-based system, which eliminates the need for pressurized oxygenation, resulting in energy savings of up to 77% compared to traditional pressurized systems. The GMT also integrates both a low-head oxygenator and a degasser into one unit, providing aquaculture facilities with a more compact, safer, and streamlined solution.

Thor Salmon will install three GMT units, along with dissolved oxygen (DO) sensors and an automated control panel, allowing for precise, remote monitoring of oxygen levels at its facility. This state-of-the-art technology will be crucial in the production of 20,000 metric tons of salmon annually, according to Thor Salmon Co-Founder Jonatan Thordarson.
Innovasea’s Iceland operations will be supported by its Norway office, in partnership with Icelandic technology company KAPP, to ensure smooth implementation and ongoing service.
“This is an exciting time for Iceland’s aquaculture industry,” said KAPP CTO Valthor Hermannson. “By collaborating with Innovasea, we’re introducing the latest technologies to further advance the sector, with a strong focus on service and customer support.”
