The Future is Green: EU Study Highlights Algae's Potential in Sustainable Bioeconomy

A new report from the European Commission details how algae can combat climate change, enhance food systems, and create a multi-billion euro market.
The European Commission has released a comprehensive Study to support a Sustainable EU Algae Industry, which explores the transformative potential of both macro- and microalgae. This landmark report, commissioned by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA), serves as a strategic roadmap to unlock the environmental, social, and economic benefits of algae, aligning with the broader EU Algae Initiative and the European Ocean Pact.
According to the study, the algae sector has a bright future, poised to become a key player in Europe's sustainable "blue bioeconomy."
From Ocean to Plate: Algae's Diverse Applications
The report identifies several key areas where algae can provide solutions to major societal challenges:

Climate Change Mitigation: Seaweed forests in EU waters currently cover an estimated 902,000 km² and can capture up to 23.5 million tonnes of carbon annually (86 million tonnes of CO₂). Expanding seaweed farming by just 10,000 km² (an area slightly larger than Cyprus) could sequester an additional 1.1 million tonnes of carbon per year (4 million tonnes of CO₂). The study estimates the avoided societal damages from this carbon sequestration could be worth up to €17.4 billion annually.

Sustainable Food and Feed: Algae offer a promising alternative to traditional, resource-intensive protein sources. The study highlights their use in aquaculture to replace fish-based feeds, which reduces pressure on wild fish stocks and promotes healthier marine ecosystems. Algae-based feeds are also rich in nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, and studies have shown they can improve animal health and the nutritional quality of products like omega-3-enriched eggs.

Biofertilizers and Biostimulants: All algae species contain natural compounds that can boost crop growth. Algae-based fertilizers can reduce nutrient loss from soil and prevent eutrophication, while biostimulants improve plant health. The report notes that this application helps create a more circular economy by recycling nutrients.

Wastewater Treatment: Algae cultivation can be integrated into wastewater treatment systems, providing a dual benefit: cleaning water while simultaneously producing valuable biomass. The study identifies urban wastewater, aquaculture effluent, horticulture effluent, and manure-based digestate as suitable media for this process.

Challenges and the Path Forward
Despite the immense potential, the algae sector still faces significant hurdles. Production costs remain high, and a lack of data and established regulatory frameworks for certain applications hinder growth. Currently, around 130,000 tonnes of algae are harvested from the wild each year, with an additional 132,700 tonnes collected from beaches in 12 EU countries. However, a much larger volume—up to 1.17 million tonnes of beach-cast algae annually—remains untapped.

To overcome these barriers, the European Commission's study proposes several key recommendations, including fostering greater research and innovation, establishing clear organic regulations for algae products, and creating economic incentives for circular nutrient use. The Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership, a collaboration of 74 partner institutions from 30 countries, is also actively funding projects to boost sustainable marine algae cultivation, reinforcing Europe's commitment to leveraging this natural resource for a more sustainable future.
