A short demonstration of how a flip-up rig can prevent boulders and large stones from becoming caught in a demersal (bottom) trawl during fishing. Flip-up rigs fitted to a trawl when working on stony ground can often save fishing crews time and money in repairs. A flip-up rig will also help a trawl to glide safely over obstacles that would otherwise cause the trawl to become fast (snagged).
The video includes footage of a 1/15 scale model trawl in a flume tank, together with underwater observations of a full size trawl operating on stony ground. Contact Sea Fish Industry Authority - or visit our website - for more information on how to construct a flip-up rig suitable for your trawl.
