United Parcel Service, Inc. (Public, NYSE:UPS) is a package delivery company. The Company delivers packages each business day for 1.8 million shipping customers to 6.1 million consignees in over 200 countries and territories. Its primary business is the time-definite delivery of packages and documents worldwide. The UPS service portfolio also includes global supply chain services and less-than-truckload transportation, primarily in the United States.
The Company operates in three segments: U.S. Domestic Package operations, International Package operations and Supply Chain & Freight operations. During the year ended December 31, 2009, UPS delivered an average of 15.1 million pieces per day worldwide, or a total of 3.8 billion packages. In June 2009, the Company acquired a unit of Intereuropa Globalni Logisticni Servis. In 2009, it acquired service agents in Slovenia and Turkey.
March 2012 - Reuters - United Parcel Service will pay $6.85 billion (5.2 billion euros) for Dutch peer TNT Express in a deal that will boost the position of the world's largest package delivery company outside the United States. UPS will become the market leader in Europe and also get access to TNT's stronger networks in the fast-growing Asian and Latin American markets, increasing the U.S. company's global sales to over $60 billion (45 billion euros) and leaving it with 477,000 employees.
