Subsidies paid to owners of fishing vessels and others working in the fishing industry under the European Union’s common fisheries policy amount to approximately €1 billion a year. Fishsubsidy.org is a project coordinated by EU Transparency, a non-profit organisation in the UK and Kaas and Mulvad, an investigative journalism and data analysis partnership in Denmark.
The aim is to obtain detailed data relating to payments and recipients of fisheries subsidies in every EU member state and make this data available in a way that is useful to European citizens.
The fishsubsidy.org project is funded by The Pew Charitable Trusts, a non-profit based in the United States of America. Full details of funding for the project will be published in due course.
EU Transparency has received funding for its project on farm subsidies from the following sources: William and Flora Hewlett Foundation ($514,000, over three years), the German Marshall Fund of the United States ($165,000), the European Social Fund (€60,000), the Open Society Foundation (€22,800). As at April 2010, funding to EU Transparency from the Pew Charitable Trusts for the fishsubsidy.org project is €59,900.43.
