Production
According to the FAO, the rise in seabream and seabass production in 2017 will take its toll on prices if no new markets are sought. However, the lower demand in the UK as a consequence of the fall in the pound and the restrictions on Russian imports will not help absorb this rise in supplies.
Spain
On Mercamadrid, in January, supplies of aquaculture species rose in the case of seabass and declined in seabream, croaker and turbot.

On Mercabarna, supplies of aquaculture species declined in January, compared with the previous month. The most important drops were those in turbot and croaker. The bulkiest supplies were those of seabream.
In January, the main suppliers of seabream were Turkey and Greece, followed by the national ones in the provinces of Guipúzcoa, Pontevedra and Murcia.
Regarding seabass, the main origins were imports coming from Greece and Turkey. They were followed by suppliers of the provinces of Murcia and Guipúzcoa.
The main origins of turbot were the producers of the provinces of La Coruña and Pontevedra. As regards imports, the main origins were Holland and France.
The main suppliers of trout were from the provinces of Guadalajara and Pontevedra.
Prices
Spain
On Mercabarna, prices of January declined in the case of anchovies due to a lower demand. Also those of anchovies and horse mackerel declined due to the rise in supplies. The quotes of sardine and scombrus mackerel increased due to a higher demnand.
Average prices of January increased in the case of small seabream, following a drop in supplies. That of small seabass also rose due to the higher demand. Prices of medium and large seabream and turbot dropped because of a lower demand. Those of medium and large seabass also declined due to a rise in supplies.
During the first week of February prices of seabream, seabass and turbot increased.
