This report focuses on catch volumes of different species of cephalopods in the EU and Argentina. We also inform on fishing bans, prices, inventories, markets, imports and exports of the species in the index.

1.1 European Union

Squid, shortfin squid, cuttlefish and octopus

Spain

Supplies of cephalopods dropped by 157 tonnes on Mercabarna in December, compared with the previous month. Drops affected most species, except for fresh cooked octopus that registered a rise. The most important drop was that in fresh giant squid.

On the wholesale market of Mercamadrid, incoming volumes of squid rose by 294 tonnes in December, compared with November. The most important variation was the rise in fresh squid, frozen octopus and fresh octopus.

France

Volumes landed at French ports during December declined in the case of squid and cuttlefish. In 2017, volumes increased both in squid and cuttlefish. The main ports were Boulogne/Mer with 316 tonnes, La Turballe with 127 tonnes and Port en Bessin with 109 tonnes.

Italy

Volumes landed at Italian ports in December declined in the case of common octopus, shortfin squid, squid and giant squid. There was a rise in cuttlefish, horned octopus and bobtail. The main ports were Aci Trezza with 10 tonnes, Corigliano Calabro with 8 tonnes, Ancona and San Benedetto del Tronto with 6 tonnes.

Volumes of squid auctioned on Danish markets declined dramatically.

Prices

Spain

On the wholesale market of Mercabarna, in December, the most important drops were those in frozen Galician octopus, fresh baby squid, frozen Californian squid, frozen squid rings and frozen squid fried in butter. The most important increases were those in fresh giant squid, fresh squid, fresh octopus, fresh cooked octopus and fresh peeled giant squid.

On Mercamadrid, prices remained stable in all frozen species. There was a rise in fresh squid and fresh octopus. The price of the rest of fresh species remained stable.

Landed volumes

At Argentine ports, in December, volumes of Illex squid dropped by 446 tonnes. Volumes landed in 2017 increased by almost 39,000 tonnes.

MARKETS

Exports of Illex squid reached 173 tonnes in October. The average price of these exports was EUR 3.12, down EUR 0.56/kg on those of August. There was also a rise of 15,4% on those of September.
