This market report focuses on catch volumes and harvests of live eel and Japanese eel in the Far East. We deal with aspects such as catch volumes, prices and imports.

Eel (Anguilla anguilla and Anguilla japónica)

Prices

At Japanese Customs, the average price of live eels in December 2014 was JPY 2,282/kg, up 9% on that of the previous month and down 43% on that of December 2013. So far this year, the price has averaged JPY 3,170, down 15% on that of the same period in 2013.

During the same month, the processed eels reached an average price at Customs of JPY 2,398/kg, up 3% on that of the previous month and down 22% on that of December 2013. During the year they averaged JPY 2,587, down 12% on those of 2013.

Markets

Imports of live eels for consumption during the analysed month totaled 549 tonnes and JPY 1,253 million, up 54% in volume and 68% in value compared with the previous month. Compared with the same month in 2005, there was a rise of 45% in volume and it was down 18% in value according to the preliminary figures of the Japanese Customs.

During the year, imports of the product from China dropped 1% in volume and 15% in value compared with those of the previous year, while those from Taiwan increased 4% in volume and declined 16% in value.

Imports of processed products in the month reached 608 tonnes, worth JPY 1,458 million, up 39% in volume and 44% in value on those of the previous month. Compared with December 2013 they were up 16% in volume but down 10% in value.

During the year imports of processed products from China grew 13% in volume and declined 1% in value on those of 2013.
