Fish farming: Stability and challenges in the sector
Source: Stockfile FIS
This week's scenario was marked by tepid business and political unrest, the fish farming market continues to search for stability.
Complete analysis carried out by Francisco Medeiros – president of Peixe BR
Tilapia Market
Analyzing the Great Lakes region, we observed a variation of just one cent per kilo of tilapia, raising the average price to R$ 10.16 (USD 1.82). In the south of the state of São Paulo and in the north of Paraná, there was a reduction of two cents in the price per kilo, reaching an average of R$ 9.57 (USD 1.73). In turn, in Paraná, there was a reduction of one cent, with the average price reaching R$ 9.37 (USD 1.70). Despite these small fluctuations, movement is considered to be within normal limits, with emphasis on the recovery of the average weight of the fish. This data points to a stabilization of the market in the Morada Nova de Minas region, which remains stable for the second consecutive week, with an average price of R$ 9.31 (USD 1.69).
It is important to highlight that, in addition to the average prices mentioned, there are sales above and below these values. In the Manaus market, for example, it is possible to observe a small price recovery for large fish from Roraima and Rondônia. This situation is not surprising, considering the period of the year in question.
Peixe BR Assembly
Moving on to the sector's institutional issues, the week was busy. At the Peixe BR Assembly, the election of the new board of directors took place, and the current president will remain in office for another two years. It is expected that management will continue to bring good results, such as those achieved in the last two years. In Brasília, a meeting promoted by Peixe BR in conjunction with the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture stood out. During the meeting, Minister André de Paula was presented with studies on feed and the impact of reducing PIS-COFINS, a topic of extreme importance, as it results in a reduction in prices for the consumer. This action is in line with ongoing work to improve food security.
Another relevant initiative took place at the public hearing held by Representative Luiz Nishimori in Congress, where the bill seeking tax equality for the sector was discussed. Currently, there are two possibilities to achieve this equality: one through the executive, through a federal decree, and the other through the bill in progress. We hope that both approaches are successful, as this is beneficial for both producers and consumers.
Also considering aspects related to the price paid to producers, it is important to highlight that other production chains, such as beef and other proteins of animal origin that compete on the consumer's plate, showed significant drops in prices throughout this week. In this sense, tilapia has remained at a stable level, paying producers satisfactorily.
