Vigo-based Grupo Profand has reached an agreement for the purchase of 100% of Caladero, a company owned by Mercadona and the chain's supplier of fish in trays.
The acquisition of Caladero is pending approval by the National Commission of Markets and Competition, said the supermarket chain of Juan Roig, owner of Caladero, who has not disclosed the amount of the operation.
The sale will allow Profand to boost its growth and consolidate its leadership in Spain both in volume and efficiency and productivity, thanks to "the important business synergies, which can be developed in the short and medium term," according to Mercadona.

The Profand fishing group incorporates with this operation a new factory bassed in Zaragoza, where more than 600 people work, in addition to the two that it has in Spain. It also provides specialization in the processes of fish such as salmon, sea bream, sea bass, sardine and trout, which is added to that already developed by Profand in other traditional products such as cuttlefish, octopus, squid, squid and shrimp, as well as new frozen solutions to "warm up and ready".
According to Mercadona, "business complementarity" guarantees the company's project and existing jobs, and the sales agreement allows Mercadona to reach the commitment it assumed in October 2010, when it acquired Caladero on a provisional basis, and with the objective to enhance the development of the sale of fish, waiting to find an industrial investor.
Mercadona has invested more than EUR 29 million since 2011 in Caladero, whose CEO, Juan Larraz, stressed that the company has become a sustainable and innovative firm.
For the owner of the Profand Group, Enrique García, the acquisition of Caladero means completing the specialization process both from the extractive part and in the final part of the value chain.
Its integration allows us to be "world leaders in the manufacture of products with high added value, both clean fresh fish, for heating or cooking and ready-to-eat product," he added.
Grupo Profand is present with production plants in Spain, Peru, Argentina, India, Senegal, the United States and Morocco. About thirty of its own boats fish in the main fishing grounds of the world and has more than 2,300 workers.
