The family owned Atlantic salmon farm, Hiddenfjord, celebrates one year of their commitment to sustainable development. In honor of this, the Faroese company, which supplies fresh salmon to North America and Europe, has shared the results of an independent study that confirms the reduction of CO2 emissions associated with transporting fish to almost zero.
On October 10 last year, Hiddenfjord ceased airborne catch altogether, becoming the world's first salmon producer to rely solely on sustainable, lower-carbon shipping methods. In honor of the event, the company released a special film detailing how the use of ocean-going vessels to transport fresh salmon to customers in Europe and North America resulted in a 94% reduction in carbon emissions in just one year.
"We are convinced that salmon are meant to swim, not fly," said Atli Gregersen, CEO of Hiddenfjord, speaking of the CO2 reduction initiative, "but also to transport our products in the most sustainable way. "
Farming salmon has a much lower environmental impact than raising beef and dairy cattle, but salmon is mainly supplied by air. Air travel is one of the main sources of CO2 emissions worldwide. A 2020 report from the Norwegian research organization SINTEF found that air freight produces about 50 times more CO2 than sea freight.
It took a lot of ingenuity for Hiddenfjord to adjust production processes to achieve its goal and maintain the quality of the salmon. The company has developed a unique fish processing and cooling system to keep fish fresh, and has also redesigned its entire global distribution chain. Her innovative designs, combined with a unique stress-free fishing system, have ensured the high quality of the salmon produced.
“We have been able to prove that our salmon do not lose their quality when transported by water,” said Mr Gregersen, announcing the results of a recent survey conducted by the Consumer Center. In a blind tasting of salmon shipped by air and sea, over a hundred consumers did not notice the difference and rated the fish equally in taste, texture and aroma. “Our unique handling and cooling system, an optimized maritime transport process that constantly monitors the storage temperature of salmon, allows us to maintain the quality of wild-raised fish and prolong its freshness,” he added.
Hiddenfjord's slogan "Raised in the Wild" fully reflects the company's practices as well as its commitment to sustainability. Salmon pens are located on the high seas near the Faroe Islands, located halfway between Iceland and Norway in the North Atlantic Ocean. Local fishermen are known for raising salmon in the world's most vulnerable conditions. Hiddenfjord has been certified to GLOBALG.A.P. standards, demonstrating responsible business conduct at every stage of production.
Hiddenfjord salmon is packaged three hours after being caught and is free of antibiotics, hormones and GMOs. The fish is vacuum sealed at the factory, after which it does not leave the cold chain until it arrives at its destination. When transported by sea, the storage temperature of the salmon is constantly monitored, which guarantees its freshness and prolongs its shelf life.
