Senate Commission approved on Wednesday the end of the trawl fishery for giant squid capture and the reunification of the draft Short Act.

Measures approved for the benefit of artisanal fishermen

The Senate Committee on Maritime Interests, Fisheries and Aquaculture unanimously approved a series of measures related to the end of trawling for giant squid and the reunification of the draft Short Act presented by the Government with other parliamentary motions.

These measures include regulations to end drilling, redistribution of the fractionating in favour of artisanal fishing, social platform and the conception of fishing resources as property of all Chileans, La Nación reported.

In this regard, Council of Defense of the Fishing Heritage (Condepp) president Jorge Bustos welcomed the measures, indicating that they put an end to the influence of industry in Congress.

"The support of the 7 families was put to an end. With this, Congress is giving clear signals that the relationship of money and politics are harmful to the country, it is no longer just a speech, the senators of the Fisheries Committee have shown transparency and reject any attempt to muddy their work," Bustos said.

The leader made a call to the Government, so that "in the same way as Senators Quinteros, Rincon, Aravena, Muñoz and Pugh have done, as well as others like Ossandón, they listen to the voice of the artisanal fishermen and not to the industrialists, who only have dedicated in the last time to threaten the State of Chile and the Chileans, with different complaints to avoid the elimination of privileges that the fishing act gave them while harming us all."
