The interim results of the salmon fishing season and the further development of the fishery were discussed at a meeting held by the head of the Federal Fisheries Agency Ilya Shestakov in the Government of the Kamchatka Territory.

Salmon fishing in Kamchatka started on June 1. The initial catch of Pacific salmon predicted by fisheries science in the Kamchatka Territory in 2024 is more than 167 thousand tons, with a general forecast for the Far East of 320 thousand tons.

Over the past few years, Kamchatka has been the main contributor to the total salmon catch in the Far East. In 2023, 490 thousand tons were produced - more than 80% of the total catch (609 thousand tons).

As of June 27, 2024, about 2.44 thousand tons of Pacific salmon were caught in the Far East, of which almost 1.8 thousand tons were caught in Kamchatka (1,790 tons or 73% of the total catch).

The beginning of the fishing season this year is not as intense in terms of fish movements as in 2023.

Scientists explain this fact by hydrological and climatic conditions, as well as by the peculiarities of salmon life cycles.

"Our science says that for now this is only a delay in approaches; VNIRO research, which is conducted after the salmon have started to spawn, will help to clarify the forecasts.

It is important to coordinate the work to ensure sustainable fishing in order to develop the resource as efficiently as possible with a priority on optimal filling of spawning grounds," said Ilya Shestakov.

The head of Rosrybolovstvo noted that the results of the 2024 fishing season will not be as high as last year, but thanks to the increase in fishing efforts, it will be possible to reach average statistical indicators.

"Of course, there will be enough fish to meet the needs of the domestic market and for export. In general, in the Far East, we expect a catch of about 340 thousand tons," said Ilya Shestakov.

The meeting discussed the priority of fisheries protection and fishing regulation - the passage of fish for the optimal filling of spawning grounds in rivers. This is of paramount importance for the reproduction of stocks.

Head of the Federal Agency for Fishery Ilya Shestakov and Governor of Kamchatka Krai Vladimir Solodov discussed issues of organizing the work of the region's fishing industry, primarily the development of the salmon fishing season.

The Governor noted the good results of fisheries protection activities and thanked the North-Eastern Territorial Administration of the Federal Agency for Fisheries and representatives of law enforcement agencies for their joint work.

The meeting discussed measures to strengthen the fight against illegal fishing and turnover of salmon fish products, the readiness of transport and coastal processing for the active phase of the fishing season.

In addition, the meeting discussed issues of organizing traditional fishing (SIPN), as well as readiness for a campaign to renew contracts for the use of fishing grounds for anadromous fishing for the next period.

A pressing topic remains the work to provide the population with fresh fish at affordable prices, as well as holding events to increase demand for domestic fish products throughout the country.
