On April 2, with donations from Jiesheng Offshore Engineering Equipment Co., Ltd. and Zhoushan Ningtai Ocean Fishery Co., Ltd., the first ocean fishery development fund was established at Shanghai Ocean University.

The fund is to commemorate and commemorate the pioneers and founders in the field of science and education of China's distant water fishery industry, encourage more young teachers and young students to devote themselves to China's distant water fishery industry, promote the high-quality development of China's distant water fishery industry, and realize the dream of strengthening China's distant water fishery industry.

On the same day, Shanghai Ocean University also held a memorial meeting for Professor Wang Yaogeng to commemorate the "father of Chinese squid fishing" and the pioneer of China's pelagic squid fishing industry. Representatives of Professor Wang Yaogeng's relatives, representatives of China Ocean Fisheries Association, Zhongshui Zhoushan Ocean Fisheries Co., Ltd., Shanghai Jinyou Ocean Fisheries Co., Ltd., representatives of retired leaders and teachers, representatives of fishery resources graduates, leaders of Shanghai Ocean University and Nearly 100 representatives from functional departments and the School of Marine Science of Shanghai Ocean University attended the memorial service.

China's pelagic fishery began in 1985. After more than 30 years of development, it has now become a major country in the world's pelagic fishery, playing an important role in enriching the supply of aquatic products and safeguarding marine rights and interests. Among them, Shanghai Ocean University has played an important role.

In recent years, the old gentlemen and old leaders in the early days of the distant water fishery, such as Ji Xinghui, Wang Yaogeng, Le Meilong, etc., have passed away one after another. In order to commemorate these pioneers and founders and encourage more teachers and students to devote themselves to China's pelagic fishery, the Pelagic Fishery Development Fund has been established, which is dedicated to the training of students, young teachers and scientific research in the field of pelagic fishery.

It is reported that in 2022, Chins's pelagic fishery output will be stable at 2 million tons, with a total of more than 2,500 pelagic fishing vessels, distributed in the three oceans, the high seas and the polar regions, and in the exclusive economic zones of more than 40 countries and regions.

Wang Yaogeng was born in Shanghai in 1930 and was a professor at Shanghai Ocean University before his death. He is the pioneer of China's pelagic squid fishing industry, known as the "father of Chinese squid fishing", and has won the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and the China Maritime Education Contribution Award.

In 1985, China's pelagic fishery had just started, and fishing grounds, fishing gear, and fishing methods were all in the exploratory stage. At this time, Wang Yaogeng was determined to explore a way out for China's fishery industry. After several years of exploration, in 1989, he, who was close to "knowing the destiny", led a team to catch squid in the sea with an old practice boat.

Wang Yaogeng was 65 years old and carried out scientific research work on a pelagic squid fishing boat

Subsequently, under his guidance, Chinese fishing boats made remarkable achievements in squid fishing operations. A Chinese squid fishing fleet that can operate in the Sea of Japan took shape, and marine fishing was revitalized. After several years of hard work, news of bumper catches and frequent high yields also came from the Pacific Ocean and quickly spread back to China, and the fishing industry was once again in a state of shock. At the age of 65, he still insists on going to the North Pacific Ocean, and participates in the front line of production on the arduous ocean squid fishing boat.

In 1995 and 1996, Wang Yaogeng continued to explore new operating sea areas in the east, and continuously researched and improved the operating technology, so that the entire squid fishing industry was quickly and steadily on the right track. The squid fishing industry has created a "three new" situation (new fishing grounds, new resources and new technologies) for China's pelagic fishery. But Wang Yaogeng realized that in order to consolidate and improve the fishery, he must strive to develop in the direction of "three modernizations", that is, to realize localization of equipment, professional production, and perennial operation. In particular, most of the current squid fishing production equipment comes from Japan, and the cost is too high. Therefore, it is necessary to realize the localization of equipment to make the squid fishing industry develop healthily and sustainably. After many efforts and coordination efforts, the localized production of equipment has achieved remarkable success.

At present, pelagic squid fishing has become an important pillar industry of my country's pelagic fishery. At 6:50 on December 27, 2022, Wang Yaogeng passed away, leaving a precious wealth for future generations.

Although Professor Wang Yaogeng has left, his spirit of diligence, honesty and integrity has been left to Shanghai Ocean University. Today, the squid fishing industry has become an important force in the "going out" strategy of China's large-scale agriculture, and the largest industry in China's ocean-going fishery.

With the foundation laid by Mr. Wang, the ocean fishery team of Shanghai Ocean University has also become an indispensable national strategic scientific and technological force for my country's ocean fishery. They developed new technologies for the discovery of new oceanic squid fishing grounds and resource cognition, and discovered 4 new fishing grounds for squid around the world.

China is modernizing its fleet of squid 'jiggers' -->

In addition, they completed a 30-year survey and distribution map of squid resources in 9 sea areas around the world, created a squid habitat model and a forecast map of squid resource distribution, and their self-developed near real-time forecast system for squid fishing conditions helped squid fishing boats arrive in time. , Precision fishing provides information support. In recent years, the accuracy rate of "squid forecast" has generally exceeded 80%, which has reversed the previous "headless fly" fishing method in one fell swoop. It has not only become an important reference for domestic fishery enterprises, but may also cause fluctuations in overseas fishery processing industries. , the influence continues to expand.
