Norm indicates that an additional 40,000 tons will be exclusively for fishing with artisanal vessels. Until March 20, 97.7% of the 100,000 ton-quota assigned last January had been met.

The Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) decided to extend the catch limit of jack mackerel (Trachurus murphyi) for the period 2020 from 100,000 tons to 140,000 tons.

Through Ministerial Resolution No. 123-2020-PRODUCE, it is established that the catches will only be made by artisanal vessels, while the suspension of extractive activities of larger scale vessels remains in force, in accordance with the provisions of Ministerial Resolution No. 094- 2020-PRODUCE.

It should be noted that through Memorandum N° 00000139-2020-PRODUCE / OGEIEE, the General Office of Impact Assessment and Economic Studies sent the “Progress Report of the Jack Mackerel Quota for CHD Fishing season 2020 - 03/20/2020,” which indicates, among others, that in relation to the global quota established of 100 000 tons last January, its uptake reaches 97.7%.

Likewise, the Directorate of Policies and Regulation of the General Directorate of Policies and Regulatory Analysis in Fisheries and Aquaculture through Report No. 046-2020-PRODUCE / DPO, points out, among other things, that in view of the favorable environmental conditions that allow the availability of the jack mackerel resource and considering IMARPE recommendations not to exceed 140,000 tons during the current year, as well as the need to ensure the acquisition, production and supply of fishery products intended for direct human consumption due to the provisions of the Decree Supreme N° 044-2020-PCM, which declares a National Emergency and Social Isolation Mandatory, is the opinion of the DGPARPA to extend the catch limit of jack mackerel for 2020 to 140,000 tons.

Likewise, in view of the need to immediately and timely guarantee the supply to national markets and, consequently, to local and national consumers of hydrobiological resources, such as jack mackerel, and in order to continue the activity extractive by artisanal fishermen whose activity supplies the national market in a fresh and refrigerated state, it was recommended that the extension of the catch limit for jack mackerel be applied only to the artisanal fleet.
