Chile will host the next meeting of the members of the Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA), which seeks to prevent, discourage and eliminate illegal fishing.
The sessions will be held between June 3 and 7 at the Crowne Plaza hotel in the capital.
The objective of this agreement, promoted by the FAO, is to prevent the vessels involved in this illegal use ports to land their catches.
Thus, the PSMA - of which Chile is part along with other 59 countries - seeks to stop trade in products derived from illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.

This activity directly threatens the conservation of marine resources, by promoting their overexploitation.
Within the framework of the meeting in Santiago, the member countries of the AMERP will issue an official declaration on the commitments - of a binding nature - reached in the sessions.
The fight against illegal fishing is one of the priorities of the Sub-secretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca), in accordance with instructions from President Sebastián Piñera and guidance from the Economy Minister, José Ramón Valente.
Undersecretary Eduardo Riquelme has stated that this illicit, in addition to seriously damaging marine ecosystems, generates significant economic losses and threatens public health.
The PSMA contributes to the conservation and sustainable use of marine resources. This instrument came into effect three years ago and the first meeting of parties was held in Oslo, Norway, in May 2017.
The celebration of this meeting in Santiago will make visible the commitment of Chile in the fight against illegal fishing, in the Latin American concert.
The development of the meeting will coincide with the "International Day for the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing" (June 5), established in 2017 by the UN General Assembly.
