Presentation of 'Pathogens and diseases in European cephalopods'

Last year more than 4,400 tons of cephalopods were sold in the market in Galicia, with a turnover of around EUR 30 million, reported the head of the Ministry of the Sea of ​​Galicia, Rosa Quintana.

Of these sales, 1,900 tons and EUR 18 million corresponded only to the octopus, which marked its best average price of the historical series, which dates back to 2001, with EUR 9.73 per kilo.

The 'conselleira del Mar' (Head), Rosa Quintana, highlighted these data during the presentation of the book Pathogens and diseases in European cephalopods, to praise the importance for the community of work such as that carried out by Anfaco-Cecopesca in coordination with the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC).

This publication contains information on the general pathology in octopus, cuttlefish and squid and has among its objectives to provide information of interest to marine pathologists, biologists, veterinarians, aquarium keepers, food technologists or researchers and students in general.

In this sense, the Minister of the Sea stressed that this work "collaborates in the integral and sustainable use of cephalopods, supports the sector and will lead to the creation of employment and wealth."

The representative of the Galician Executive also emphasized the potential of this book that brings to society scientific knowledge, commercial value and the economic dimension of cephalopods. In this sense, he highlighted "the fishing and transforming capacity of the sector, which made the cephalopods an economic base of first level for Galicia, in equity with its representativeness and gastronomic importance".

In this consolidation, Quintana also recognized the work done by the research centers, which developed "optimal capture, breeding, processing and commercialization techniques for the growth of Galicia".

"The presentation of this practical atlas shows how public-private collaboration is key to the socio-economic progress of our land," stressed the head of Mar, who added that the Xunta "is aware of the value of scientific knowledge applied to issues of social interest" , hence the support for the promotion of this publication.

Rosa Quintana also thanked the work of the association of the canning industry Anfaco-Cecopesca for this work and for the one that has been carried out since its foundation.

The publication

Pathogens and diseases in European cephalopods aims to show the aspects of interest about this zoological group little studied and to make a general review of the pathologies of the different species existing in other areas of the planet. The book also seeks to provide updated information to all professionals interested in this subject and serve as useful material for courses of different types such as doctorates, quality control courses or to obtain the title of animal caretakers for experimentation, among others.
