The Chubut Fisheries Secretariat and the NGO CeDePesca (Center for Development and Sustainable Fisheries) have signed a collaboration agreement to work together with the objective of achieving an international sustainability certification for the province's shrimp fishery (Pleoticus muelleri), together with seven processing companies with investments in Chubut.
The Fisheries Improvement Project (FIP) of the coastal shrimp fishery of Chubut was launched by the private sector in collaboration with CeDePesca two years ago. According to this organization, it has worked seriously in the analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the fishery and in overcoming the latter.
"The new agreement represents an important endorsement of the Ministry of Fisheries for the FIP, and it could not be otherwise, since its objectives are completely aligned with our policies," Chubut Fisheries Secretary Adrian Awstin said.
Both entities have agreed to begin the immediate coordination of actions to move quickly towards the agreed objective.
"This certification is very important to access markets of difficult access such as Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, England, Australia and important market niches in the United States," said Ernesto Godelman, CeDePesca's director. "In fact, these markets have already begun to open up when information about the ongoing project began to transcend publicly," he added.
The companies that currently participate in the FIP are: Cabo Vírgenes, Iberpesca, Conarpesa, Pesquera Veraz, Food Partners Patagonia, Consermar and La Escalerona.
