The Committee on Fisheries of the Senate unanimously approved this Monday the "short" bill sent by President Sebastián Piñera to modify the current sector law, regarding the capture licenses of the industrial sector.
At the core, the Executive's initiative ends with the automatic and perpetual renewal of industrial permits, at the end of the current 20-year period in line with a commitment signed by the Chief Executive.
"We are very satisfied with this ratification. There was a commitment from President Sebastián Piñera. And the commitments are fulfilled," said undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture Eduardo Riquelme.
"The main purpose of this law is to put an end to the automatic renewal of the rights of the fishing industry so that at the end of the period being currently enjoyed 100 per cent of the industrial fishing rights are auctioned," the authority stated.
The senators of the commission, chaired by Rabindranath Quinteros, approved in particular the initiative, which in September had been endorsed in general.
During the session on Monday, the senators ratified, in addition, some indications on diverse subjects, which have been agreed with the Government, from the permanent dialogue between the undersecretary and the members of that commission.
The "short" bill is in the first constitutional process and it still has to go to the Senate room. After that, the modifications will have to be discussed in the Chamber of Deputies.
A "long" act that will be focused on the artisanal fishing sector will soon be added to the "short" act.
