The first container with almost 18 tonnes of shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei from Peru has just entered the Chinese market as a result of the successful efforts made by the governments of both countries through their respective health authorities, reported the National Fisheries Health Agency (SANIPES).
This first batch, containing 17,962 kilos of frozen shrimp, entered with the corresponding sanitary certificate issued by SANIPES and passed all the controls carried out by the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China (GACC) as sanitary authority, in the port of Taijin, Xingang.
SANIPES executive director and Fisheries and Aquaculture vice minister of the Ministry of Production Javier Atkins highlighted the expansion of international markets for shrimp from Ecuador and said that access to a large market such as China will contribute to the development of the shrimp industry.

He indicated that in 2017, China imported 63,000 tonnes of frozen shrimp, which represents a growth of 19.3 per cent since 2012. He also noted that the South American countries Argentina and Ecuador accounted for 55 per cent of imports for the year 2017.
Shrimp production in Peru is one of the main activities of the aquaculture sector. The production areas are located in Tumbes and Piura and supply both the national and international markets, especially the United States and Europe.
From SANIPES, it was recalled that talks for the access of Peruvian shrimp to the Chinese market began in 2014. In this context, visits were made by Chinese health authorities to Peru to learn about their production system, which included visits to farming centres and processing plants that have already been exporting shrimp to other markets.
The Sanitary Protocol for the export of Peruvian shrimp was finally signed by the sanitary authorities of the two countries in September 2017.
