The survey, called "MPA Namuncurá - Burdwood Bank: Coupling of variables and processes: Ecosystem Engineers and Biological Carbon Pump", will last approximately 22 days, during which a group of scientists from INIDEP and the Austral Center for Scientific Research (CADIC-CONICET) will work in the area covered by the plateau and the Burdwood Bank, as well as in the control area off the coast of Tierra del Fuego and on the Beagle Channel.

The scientific cruise aims to assess the status and operation of the Namuncurá MPA with emphasis on benthic ecosystem engineers, to complete a baseline of ecosystem knowledge and generate biophysical indicators.
The operation of the biological carbon pump in the Namuncurá MPA will also be studied with emphasis on the processes of the water column mediated by the plankton and the benthic pelagic coupling, in order to establish a baseline of knowledge and generate biophysical indicators.

The Namuncurá Marine Protected Area (Namuncurá MPA) is the first oceanic protected area in Argentina and is located in the Burdwood Bank area 150 km east of Isla de los Estado and south of Falkland Islands (Malvinas). It was established by law in order to “conserve an area of high environmental sensitivity and of importance for the protection and sustainable management of the biodiversity of the seabed”
