So that the Government of Spain grants exceptional aid to the fishing sector this year

The Spanish fishing sector, represented by the Spanish Fishing Confederation (CEPESCA), has sent a letter to the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, requesting that the Government of Spain grant exceptional aid to the sector in this year 2024, taking into account takes into account the increase in the exploitation costs of fishing activity and the instability of its market.

The reasons that Cepesca alleges in the letter for this request are based on the new increase in the operating costs of fishing companies, which the sector estimates at around 25% in the last year; as well as the continued reduction in the consumption of fish and shellfish (more than 30% since 2008 in our country), aspects that continue to cause losses and put the profitability of the fishing sector at risk, and that are aggravated by the international situation.

The sector points out in the letter its special concern about the growing instability "originated not only by COVID and Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but also by the crisis in the Middle East generated by the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel, its response and Iran's reactions.

In this context, Cepesca would also “thank” Minister Planas for defending, before the European Commission (EC), that the support measures provided for in Article 26 of the European Maritime, Fisheries and Fisheries Fund be reauthorized until the end of this year. of Aquaculture (FEMPA), as was allowed at the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, and to support the request made by the European organizations CopaCogeca and Europêche – of which Cepesca is a part – to the Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fishing, Virginijus Sinkevičius.

These organizations have asked the Commissioner to extend until December 31, 2024 the measures contemplated in the Crisis and Transition Temporary Framework regarding state aid for the fishing sector, in accordance with the provisions for other sectors.

The fishing sector once again remembers that fishing is part of the solution for a sustainable and healthy future, and that it is necessary to recognize the fundamental role that fishery products have due to their high nutritional value and low carbon footprint, which makes them an important element to achieve global social and climate objectives.
