The Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) has decided to increase the 2019 catch quota for giant squid or pota (Dosidicus gigas) to 504,000 tonnes.
The quota had been initially set at 450,000 tonnes, but the Ministry, based on a report prepared by the Institute of the Sea of Peru (IMARPE), considered that the conditions for extending that quota by 12% have been met.

As detailed in Ministerial Resolution No. 475-2019-PRODUCE, IMARPE indicates in said report that “the accumulated landings of the giant squid until September 2019 and the extrapolation of the landings during the second semester, indicate that the entire quota would be consumed by the end of October.”
In addition, it explains that "taking into account that the 2019 CPUE (catch per unit effort) is slightly above the average of recent years, this would indicate a greater availability compared to previous years, if current environmental conditions are maintained."
Consequently, IMARPE specialists conclude that based on the percentages of variation of the maximum sustainable yield estimated for this year, “it is possible to consider that the total allowable catch for 2019 does not exceed the upper confidence limit of the quota estimate (12%), equivalent to 54,000 additional tonnes.”
