In December 2019, frozen cod milts imported about 49 tons and accumulated imports in December amounted to about 2,927 tons.
The figure was down 3 percent from 3,006 tons a year earlier, the report showed.
The average December import volume from 2014 to 2010 was 31 tons, up about 58 percent from 49 tons in December 2019.
Milt or soft roe also refers to the male genitalia of fish when they contain sperm, used as food. Many cultures eat milt, often fried, though not usually as a dish by itself.
In Korean cuisine, the milt (이리 iri) of Alaska pollock, cod, blackmouth angler, bogeo, and sea bream are considered a delicacy.
The major importers of frozen cod milts are the United States, Russia, Iceland and Norway, and about 69% of the total volume was imported from the United States.
About 17 percent (477 tons) were imported from Russia, about 10 percent (285 tons) from Iceland, and about 4 percent (116 tons) from Norway.
