The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca) in the Aysén region has announced two rulings by the Illustrious Court of Appeals of Coyhaique against Exportadora Los Fiordos Limitada for various violations of current regulations.

First Violation: False Reporting

The first ruling penalizes the company for providing inaccurate information to Sernapesca regarding the operation of a fish farming center. During a document-based inspection by Sernapesca officials, it was found that the data submitted by the company to the Aquaculture Information System did not meet the requirements established by the applicable regulations.

Second Violation: Environmental and Biosecurity Failures

The second ruling relates to the company’s failure to comply with regulations on the daily removal of mortality from its cultivation units. Additionally, the company neglected to implement necessary bio-containment and biosecurity measures to prevent environmental contamination, including water pollution. These deficiencies were identified during an on-site inspection by Sernapesca officials, who observed flaws in the company's sanitary handling and control procedures.

Penalties Imposed

As a consequence of these violations, the court has imposed a total fine of 330 UTM (Monthly Tax Units) on the company, along with an additional fine of 5 UTM on its legal representative.

Sernapesca's Response

Daniela Leiva, the regional director of Sernapesca in Aysén, emphasized the significance of the ruling:

"This decision demonstrates the Court's commitment to ensuring that aquaculture, which is vital to our local economy, is conducted under strict sustainability standards and in compliance with current regulations. Sernapesca will continue its necessary inspections to prevent such violations and protect the marine environment," she stated.

Commitment to Sustainability

Sernapesca reiterated its dedication to fostering responsible and transparent aquaculture practices. The agency aims to safeguard marine ecosystems while promoting sustainable industry practices that balance economic growth with environmental protection.

These rulings send a clear message to the aquaculture industry about the importance of adhering to regulatory standards to ensure the sector's long-term viability and environmental sustainability.
