Fish landings remain stable in September

Icelandic vessels caught 109,000 tonnes of fish in September, which is an 1% increase from the same month last year, according to preliminary data published by Statistics Iceland.

Demersal catches were just over 36,000 tonnes, an increase of 2%, whereof cod catches amounted to 21,400 tonnes.

Catches of pelagic fish were just over 69,000 tonnes, which is the same as in September 2018. However, the composition of the pelagic catch was different, because much more herring was caught this year, while mackerel catch decreased accordingly.

Flatfish catches amounted to 1,800 tonnes and decreased by 4% compared to September 2018. Shellfish catches were nearly 2,000 tonnes and increased by 35%.

The total catch in a 12 month period from October 2018 to September 2019 was nearly 1,092 thousand tonnes and decreased by 13% compared with the same period a year earlier.

The value index for September was 9.7% lower than in September 2018.
