AquaChile and WWF sign collaboration agreement

Leading conservation organization WWF Chile and AquaChile, the main salmon company in the country, have signed a memorandum of understanding in order to collaborate to protect and conserve the planet's vital resources, through the reduction of the company's environmental and social impacts.
The agreement, as its main working axis, seeks to promote and achieve ASC certification of 100% of AquaChile's farming centers in operation in the country, while the company has committed to:
Reduce the use of antibiotics and promote public policies that encourage the decrease in the use of antibiotics in Chile; ratify its commitment not to operate its concessions in lakes productively and keep them for scientific, research, or monitoring of their environmental condition.
Develop a comprehensive policy for the relationship with communities, implementing the methodologies described in the document: "ASC Certification in Chile: Box of Guidelines and Tools for salmon companies in their responsible relationship with communities", and measure progress in the field.
Improve waste management through a voluntary marking of 100% of its floating structures with its logo and name, to facilitate the identification of waste at any time and in any place. In addition, AquaChile will continue with its permanent program of voluntary cleaning of beaches in areas of high environmental impact.
The company will also support the development of projects related to local biodiversity monitoring promoted by WWF Chile, and is committed to supporting the work developed by WWF Chile to identify areas of high conservation value in Patagonia and support sustainable management initiatives conservation objects Likewise, it will participate in initiatives promoted by WWF Chile to promote the development of aquaculture based on an ecosystem approach.
“At AquaChile we are convinced of the importance of producing salmon in a responsible way and for this we must constantly incorporate the best practices. The alliance with WWF challenges us to implement concrete measures for more sustainable aquaculture,” said AquaChile General Manager Sady Delgado.
For his part, Ricardo Bosshard, director of WWF Chile, considers that the industry in general must move towards more demanding and currently available standards, such as voluntary ASC certification, as well as other more ambitious measures, which include the decrease in the use of antibiotics. In this regard, "AquaChile appears as a relevant actor, which we hope will mark a path for the rest of the industry, making concrete progress in terms of reducing the threats and impacts that aquaculture practices have generated in ecosystems and communities in southern Chile", he pointed out.
