Despite an overall decline in fish imports, Russia's trout imports from Turkey surged by nearly 30% from January to August 2024, reaching 38,000 tons, according to the Analytical Center of the Fish Union, based on Turkish customs data.

  1. Volume Growth:

    • Imports of frozen trout increased by 20%, totaling 25,000 tons.
    • Chilled trout imports surged by 50%, reaching 13,000 tons.
  2. Monetary Increase:

    • The value of trout imports from Turkey rose by 20%, amounting to $205 million.
    • Frozen trout accounted for $132 million, up 8% year-on-year, while chilled trout imports grew by 45%, totaling $73 million.
  3. Price Changes:

    • The average price of frozen trout from Turkey dropped by 9% to $5.2 per kg.
    • The price of chilled trout also declined by 5%, averaging $5.8 per kg.
  4. Key Drivers of Growth:

    • Increased Aquaculture Production: Turkey's aquaculture trout production rose by 16% in 2023, surpassing 220,000 tons, with 70% being freshwater trout and 30% sea trout. Turkish trout farmers have nearly doubled their output compared to 2018.
    • Competitive Pricing: In August 2024, chilled trout in Istanbul was priced at $3.7 per kg, significantly lower than the $15-19 per kg price of Murmansk aquaculture trout in Russia, depending on quality and size.

“Imported supplies not only expand the variety of fish products available but also improve the affordability of fish for Russian consumers,” stated Alexander Panin, Chairman of the Fish Union.
