The appearance of more and more Patagonian voices in favor of opening the doors of Argentine ports to the foreign fleet that operates on mile 201 in order to take advantage of their presence to increase the movement of labor and logistics services, generated a strong reaction from the Chamber of Fisheries, from where they were critical and concerned about this situation.

 

 

They crystallized it through a note sent last week to the Undersecretary of Fisheries of the Nation, Carlos Liberman, to whom they expressed a series of concrete concepts for which the attention of this fleet in national ports would be counterproductive, but they also requested take steps to prevent it.

 

"The fishing operation without adherence to the Argentine regulations for the administration of the fishing resources of this fleet, adding the recognition to fish at mile 201 by allowing it to enter our ports and granting authorization to unload in Argentina would put the fleet in a very serious condition. national fleet", they remarked in the note sent to the Undersecretary, dated last November 30.

 

 

With the signature of CEPA, CaIPA, CAPECA, CAPA; Freshwater shipowners, UDIPA, Coastal Association, Cafrexport and CAPIP as members of the Interchamber of Fisheries, the sector asked Carlos Liberman to "dismiss any alternative in that direction."

 

In the Interchamber they understand that granting assistance in our ports to the fleet that operates at mile 201 will constitute an "express recognition and consent to their presence in the area." Something contrary to the idea of a comprehensive policy for the sustainable exploitation of high seas resources and the defense of straddling species through a comprehensive system in which Argentina obtains benefits together with those who cooperate with it, they pointed out.

 

 

"It is not possible to provide port and operational facilities to those who have repeatedly shown that they do not respect the rights and interests of the country, its institutions, PNA, INIDEP, Undersecretary of Fisheries, etc., engaging in illegal fishing in jurisdictional waters of our Exclusive Economic Zone. , fleeing from inspections and forcing persecution and risking the safety of our ships, both patrol and fishing vessels”, they marked in the note, to which Revista Puerto had access.

 

 

 

That is why they believe that the concession of port facilities "means simply ending the national fishing industry." And they argued it with some specific reasons: it would lower the operating costs of the vessels operating in that area even more and would encourage more catches since the proximity of our ports to foreign ports means savings in days of navigation and, therefore, more days of fishing, making your operation more efficient.

 

“Reducing costs, producing more and with better tools is something that every fishing owner wants. But it is inadmissible to grant it to the competition since in the short term it will take us out of the market”, they expressed in the note to Carlos Liberman.
