INIDEP achieves important advances in wreckfish culture technology

Important advances were made during the first breeding season 2018-2019 of the stock of wreckfish breeders (Polyprion americanus) kept in captivity since 2013 at the facilities of the National Institute of Fisheries Research and Development (INIDEP).
The specialists responsible for the activity were able to register 16 egg-layin events totally naturally and spontaneous, of which 4 were fertilized. The spawning period lasted from October 25 to December 17, 2018 with a total of 5,097,000 eggs. The fertilized eggs hatched on the sixth day, obtaining the first larvae of this species in Argentina.

The execution of a special protocol for the development of the wreckfish larviculture allowed to obtain important advances in the technology of its culture. The larvae managed to feed on live food (rotifer and Artemia) and balanced feed.
During this short period it was possible to obtain a wealth of valuable information through the daily taking of samples of larvae during their growth, to perform morphological measurements and subsequent histological and genetic analyzes, the latter being determined in collaboration with the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) of Vigo, Spain.
